If you’re looking for a winter adventure that’s more about endurance than technical climbing, Mt. Saint Helens may be the expedition for you. This year, the snowpack in Washington has been historically low. While the lack of snow isn't ideal for skiers, if we’re trying to turn lemons into lemonade, it has made many trailheads accessible long into the winter months; so at least there’s that.
When I saw a long and dry weather window in February, I immediately texted my husband and started scoping out hikes in Washington that would be both a challenging and fun winter adventure. We agreed upon a winter climb of Mt. Saint Helens, and it was everything I wanted and more.

Every year, thousands of hopeful backpackers flock to recreation.gov, vying for a coveted permit to camp in the Enchantments. With only about 10% of applicants winning, the lottery is fiercely competitive. Last year, I finally won, which might not make me a permit expert perse, but it does make me very, very lucky.
The lottery opens on February 15, so if you want a camping permit in the Enchantments this summer, the time to plan is now! When summer comes to a close in Washington, the weather turns and the Big Dark descends. Washington is beautiful year-round though, and the changing of the seasons shouldn't be an excuse to stay indoors. There is an abundance of trails you can explore in any season here in Washington. Whether you’re seeking serene lakes, dramatic waterfalls, coastal vistas, or mountain lookouts, there are a lot of easy hikes you can do in any season.
I’ve compiled a list of nine accessible, (relatively) easy hikes you can enjoy throughout the year, perfect for families, beginners, or anyone wanting to explore Washington’s natural wonders. |
